Can Dogs Eat Duck?

Kamo • 鴨 • Duck

As allergies go, they are as individual as say a fingerprint. That applies for both dogs and humans alike. But generally, there are fewer instances of dogs being allergic to duck. Can dogs have duck? For sure, in fact, it’s a good poultry alternative to chicken or protein alternative to beef (these are common proteins that dogs are allergic to).

Duck is rich in iron and it provides dogs with a lean, easy-to-digest protein source. Duck is also a great source of amino acids, which helps to support strong muscles, not to mention healthy fats, omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and helpful B Vitamins. Duck meat is rich in antioxidants like zinc and selenium. They’re important to help your dog’s immune system and protect him or her against bacterial infections, viruses, parasites and other pathogens.

These are the benefits of duck for dogs:

  • A more resilient immune system

  • A stronger musculoskeletal system

  • Better cognitive function in senior dogs

  • Improved energy levels

  • Improved heart and kidney function

  • Reduced anxiety and hyperactivity

Symptoms of an allergic reaction to duck include:

  • Coughing

  • Scratching

  • Sneezing

Should you observe these symptoms, take them immediately to the veterinarian for proper treatment. As always, with any new food, it’s always best to feed your dog only a little at first. When in doubt, please consult your veterinarian.
