Milk

Miruku • ミルク • Milk

Our dogs (and cats) love milk, just like we do. Milk is safe for our pets, and serves as a tasty reward or part of a hearty meal.

The Problem with Lactose

Many dogs are actually lactose intolerant and have difficulty digesting cow’s milk, but can handle other forms of dairy products like cheddar cheese or plain yogurt as they are easier to digest. With lactose intolerance, there are various degrees and thereby different symptoms (mild or severe):

  • Loose Stools

  • Gas

  • Vomiting

  • Abdominal pain

  • Diarrhoea

The tricky bit about lactose intolerance is, you’ll never know until you try. Also, even if your dog is not lactose intolerant, a large amount of milk can induce your dog to display those symptoms.

Goat’s Milk

When we think of milk, we generally think cow’s milk. But goat’s milk contains less lactose and more easily digestible compared to cow's milk. It is much better to feed your dog goat’s milk because aside from being a very much complete food, it has a list of benefits including:

1. Being Easily Digestible
Goat’s milk is high in vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, trace elements, enzymes, protein, and important fatty acids. Dogs take only 20 minutes to digest it because its fat globules are smaller than cow milk and lacks a protein agglutinin, the fatty acids are more digestible than in cow’s milk.

2. Boosts the Immune System.
Goat’s milk contains a broad range of minerals and vitamins as well as nutrients found in most milk. Alpha-s-1 casein is a protein that is the major allergen in cow’s milk and goat’s milk contains 90% less. It also contains prebiotics and probiotics that are great for your dog’s overall health. They aid digestion and works well to deal with vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation. They also support against inflammation. Not to mention it’s rich calcium content.

3. Increase Palatabiity
Being very tasty, goat’s milk has a strong scent (sometimes too strong for humans) that increases the appetite of our dog. It’s a healthier option.

With any new food, it’s always best to feed your dog only a little at first. Wait to see of there is any adverse reaction, if any, before you let your dog eat more. When in doubt, consult your veterinarian.
