Why Do Dogs Eat Grass?

Why do dogs (or cats) eat grass?

Why do dogs eat grass or why do dogs and cats eat grass? It is rather common (even for wild dogs) and very normal dog behavior, but there are so many reasons why!

  • Dietary Fibre: Some dogs will eat grass if they aren’t getting enough dietary fiber which is an important part of their nutrition. They may be eating a diet that may be high in fiber but it may not contain enough roughage for them to stimulate the intestinal tract.

  • Other Nutrients: Aside from fiber, some dogs may look to boost their vitamin levels. Grass contains a nutrient called folic acid, which helps move oxygen through the bloodstream. Some experts theorize that eating grass may also help ease sore throats.

  • Tastes Good: There are dogs that may just like to eat grass because they love it, the smell, the taste, the texture. Eating grass actually isn’t harmful to dogs, but the problem is sometimes there are pesticides or chemicals that may be in the grass that will negatively impact them.

  • Upset Stomach: Never underestimate the intelligence of dogs. Not all dogs will vomit after eating grass, but some do it specifically to induce vomiting in order to clear the gut and feel better.

But if this becomes a very common occurrence in your dog, you might want to supplement your dog’s diet with higher fiber foods with more roughage, with vegetables safe for your dog. It is better to control what they eat, so it’s best to give them what they need so they are less at risk when they eat grass that you’re uncertain is safe for them to do so.

Best high fiber food and good for dogs:

With any new food, it’s always best to feed your dog only a little at first. Wait to see if there is any adverse reaction like diarrhoea, itching, and/or vomiting, if any, before you let your dog eat more. When in doubt, please consult your veterinarian.

With Minto Bites by Kuro Snacks, they will get a healthy dose of Wheatgrass for dogs in their diet and have their breath smell good too, among many other benefits.
