Leave A Light On For Dog

Here is a fun fact. Can dogs (and cats) see in the dark? Actually, yes they can. They can see better than us humans in the dark than we can in bright or dim light. Generally in a well lit country like Singapore, even if we don’t have any lights on, there is still light coming from out the window from the street lamps, etc. It’s never truly pitch black. But when it is in complete darkness, then our dogs too may not be able to see. If they are very familiar with the layout of the house, they may still be able to move around.

Dogs are actually troopers and are okay if you leave them in the dark for a while. It is actually more for our own emotional reasons, we don’t want to leave them in the dark! But there are cases where some dogs (just like some humans) can be afraid of the dark, as funny as the sounds. Okay, we did laugh out loud as we said this. These are some of the signs:

  • Destroying things

  • Easily startled

  • Hiding

  • Nervousness

  • Scratching, digging or clawing

  • Whining, barking

These might be similar to separation anxiety, and sometimes they get that way. Should you leave a light on for your dog? It’s actually okay to leave some light on for them, whether or not they are afraid of the dark. Here are some suggestions to tackle this:

Go Retro You could try using a lava lamp, or any other lamp really, but it has to be manually controlled!

Xiaomi Smart Bulb
This is my favourite and I have a few of these. You can control the amount and color of the light and you can control between what time it’s on. You can even get Siri on iPhone or your Google Assistant to turn it on/off via your phone at any time. Best of all, it fits many different E27 configuration lamps like this beautiful one for the dining area or the desk lamp that we have any other E27 ones you can easily get from Ikea.

The sensor lights make the most sense for sleepy time. Because just like us, they sleep better in the dark and the sensors could be useful when they stir in the night to get a drink of water or if they are night eaters, it helps them find their way a lot better. We also have a few e27 Light Bulbs that we have installed in the desk lamp and others, so that they turn on automatically in the evening and turn off after a certain time, we can also turn them on/off when we want. A combination like that makes total sense.
