When we think of Security Cameras, we often think this is a good way to catch thieves in action when they break into our homes so that we have evidence. But these days, security cameras have evolved. It is often used as a means to monitor anything or anyone from our babies (human babies), cats, dogs, aged parents (human parents). So these days, while they are classified as security cameras, monitors, webcam, etc, but they do provide us security in many sense of the word. We will focus a little more on the uses specific to our dog, but we are certain you will have a good use for it nonetheless for other things.

What Do They Do At Home
Demystify the secret life of pets. With a security camera, you are now able to check on your dog and see what they get up to all day while you’re away. This works best if your dog is confined to an area, however, we don’t recommend that as your dog should be free to roam the home while you’re away. If your dog is anything like Kuro, she’ll be in the usual spots. Because our HDB home is small, she’s generally in the living area and can be on camera. When she’s not, we use a XiaoMi Camera that can turn and scan the house so we can always keep up with her. But there are many options on Amazon to choose from.

I See You Fussy Eaters
Okay, I tend to be a bit of a worry wart when it comes to Kuro, she is an extremely fussy eater, and when I’m out all day, I worry about whether she eats her food on time and while I’m away, I tend to check up on her every now and then to see if she’s eaten and I can scroll back using my app to see exactly what time she eats. This helps me keep a log to optimize her feeding times to ensure she gets the optimal nutrition. So, if your dog is like Kuro, a security camera is perfect to keep tabs on their feeding habits.

What Are You Doing?
While we’re away from the home, that’s when our dogs have the ability to get up to mischief. Whilst I cannot do it all the time, but when I spot Kuro doing something she’s not supposed to, ripping up paper, trying to get at her Kuro Snacks stash or biting on her paws, I can reprimand her on the spot via 2 way communication through the security camera. That would make her stop what she’s doing. Also, it is a great way to keep the communication open so it doesn’t seem like she’s truly alone all day. She’s so used to it now, even though I still believe it’s sheer luck, I can access the security camera by phone and I see her looking straight back at me. It was scary at first, but now, I’m pretty used to it.

Cold Hard Evidence
I am not proud of this. But I have on occasion, used it to check on Kuro’s babysitter’s punctuality and to see if they are truly doing what they were tasked to do. Can you say control freak? Well, it’s not really, but since I have the option to monitor them, I just do sometimes. Everything is recorded anyway, and stored and only cleared when the memory card is full and then they are deleted using the first in first out method. I can get a week’s worth for the security camera that I use. This is also like the forementioned use of security cameras - exactly that, to provide a bit of security in case there are any unauthorized entry to my apartment or help you remember where you last placed your keys. Now, if you cannot access your security camera, there could be a power outage. Having one that you can access all the time is a good idea. Power trips can be for many reasons, this gives you a better sense of security. If you have an automated light that comes on for your dog, you can also check if the light is working using a security camera.

Memories Bring Back You
Besides all this, it’s a good and fun way of capturing some additional memories, from a different angle. When I have time, slash one fine day, I know I will look back at some of these footages and laugh myself silly, relishing these precious moments of my dog. Like in the video above, how excited she is when I’m home or the image of her staring right into the security camera.

So, ultimately, there are many uses to the security camera. What else would you use it for? Let us know, we’d like to hear from you.
