Shishamo For Dogs

You might have had Shishamo at your local cafe, or Japanese restaurant (also known as the Japanese Pregnant Fish), but can your dog or cat have it? Why of course they can! Not only can they eat Shishamo, it’s also good for them. Shishamo, otherwise known as the Capelin Fish, is a small forage fish of the smelt family. The capelin is silver in colour with a torpedo shaped, slender body. Every part of it from its head to tail, tiny bones and all, can be eaten and digested. The fish is small and one of the reasons why it’s so delicious is, whilst it has fairly little meat, it is mostly filled with a rich caviar. It’s as delicious to our pets as it is to us.

So what are the benefits of consuming Shishamo?
The Capelin Fish is rich in easily digestible proteins, calcium, polyunsaturated fats, Omega-3 acids. It also helps treat arthritis, tooth decay and bone fractures. Capelin is a good source of iodine and selenium needed for proper thyroid function. In addition, these two substances promote bone and hair growth. This snack is a low-fat, low-calorie, low-mercury source of vitamin B12, calcium, selenium and omega-3 fatty acids. It is best to eat fish well cooked and never raw, so there will be no parasite risks, and you can only enjoy its useful properties.

As with any new diet, If you are uncertain if your cat/dog can consume anything or if you’re wondering about a change in diet, please consult your veterinarian.
