Driving Your Dog
Before you go out on a drive with your dog (or cat), whether you’re transporting or you’re planning on a bit of a road trip, it’s important to take note of a couple of things.
Motion Sickness
We covered this in another journal entry, but make sure you ease your dog into it (quite different from the first drive which is likely to bring them home after purchasing or adopting them). You never know if your dog suffers from motion sickness or anxiety and believe you me, when they make a mess in your car, it may stick with you for a long time, pardon the pun. Take them on shorter car rides and slowly increase the distance. Also, check out Kuro Snacks that help with Motion Sickness below, feed them at least half an hour before the ride.
Plan Your Meals & Snacks
Don’t feed your dog in a moving vehicle. You can feed them 3 to 4 hours before. And it certainly won’t hurt to feed them a few pieces of Buta by Kuro Snacks or any Kuro Snacks for Motion Sickness between half an hour to an hour before the drive. The ginger in it will help with potential/motion sickness , it’s like a dog car sickness natural remedy. Always carry a water bottle with you with water from home (whether it’s tap water, boiled water, or whatever but of course at room temperature), as you don’t want them drinking water from a tainted source.
Grab Your Supplies
Don’t forget your poo bags, food and/or snacks, dog blanket, toys and any other essentials to make your dog feel comfortable.
Make Your Dog Feel Comfortable
Turn on the air-conditioning and don’t play loud music.
Keep Your Pet Safe
If your dog has a bit of anxiety, it might be worthwhile to invest in a good crate or carrier. This also will protect them from abrupt stops and protects you from distractions. If you’re using a crate, use one that’s large enough for your pet to stand, sit, lie down and turn around in. If you’re not using any of those, then strap your dog using a safety harness or seat belt. When using a safety belt, you might want to opt for a harness instead. Never Leave Your Dog Alone In The Car
Be a responsible parent. Don’t leave your dog alone in the car, stay with them or bring them along. Do not leave them there alone. The parked car can be like a hot oven, even with the windows open. You risk them getting heatstroke. Also, leaving them alone can risk them being stolen, it happens.
